Day Trip to Nikko: Part Three

Monday, April 28, 2014

After we were done at Toshugu Shrine, we took a bus up the mountain to Chuzenji, which is famous for it's lake and waterfall.

If we had gone during the high season everything would have been green, but I still thought it looked cool.

After we were done looking at the lake, we walked to the waterfall. It sort of seemed like everyone in the entire town was at the waterfall...and there weren't even that many people there. It was really deserted, which was surreal after living in Tokyo for a month.

The waterfall was much larger than it looks in this picture, and it went down pretty far. I took this picture from a platform about 400 meters away (maybe? I'm not very good with measurements).

And then there was this, which was weird, so I took a picture. It's supposed to be a croquette (クローケ), and the sign says "wet paint."

After that we went to the onsen (no pictures of this for obvious reasons), and then walked along the main street. We found a shop that sold hand-carved wooden bowls, plates, chopsticks, etc. The owners were an old married couple who had lived in Chuzenji and worked in the shop for forty years. The husband made everything they sold by hand, so I decided to buy this little wooden tray. The shop owner even carved my name into the back of the tray in kanji for free.
