Ohanami in Yoyogi Park and Meiji Jingu Shrine

Thursday, April 3, 2014

After the opening ceremony, a big group of us went to Yoyogi Park to do ohanami (花見) the proper way. The proper way involves picnics and hanging out and day drinking.

There were probably thousands of people in the park, which is the largest in Tokyo, and we hung out there for the rest of the day under a canopy of cherry blossoms.

The famous Meiji Jingu Shrine is about a 10-minute walk from where we had set up our picnic, so a few of us walked over to check it out.

This is a wall of sake barrels on the path leading up to the shrine.  At the time I didn't really understand why they were there (too lazy to read the sign), but later I found this article online explaining their significance.
