Golden Week in Okinawa: Part Four

Wednesday, May 21, 2014

Here is a view from up the mountain on Zamami. We rented bikes one day and rode up the mountain (I admit, I had to walk next to my bike sometimes) to the highest point, which has a lookout.

Hanging out on Furuzamami beach. We did this a lot.

Here's a dog statue. There was a matching one on Aka Island and I think the story is that the two dogs face each other because they are representing real dogs that swam across the ocean to see each other or something. I should probably google this to verify the story but meh. Too lazy.

We tried to get this fruit thing down because it looked like a pineapple and we thought we could eat it. But there were a lot of sharp leaves around it and it was connected to a branch with a stem the size of a rope. Turns out it's inedible, because we saw a smashed one on Aka island on a later day and there wasn't really any fruit inside.

More shisa statues in town.

We saw a really beautiful sunset one afternoon.

And we attempted to watch the sunrise on another day, but it was too foggy to see the sun. I did get some pictures of the town of Zamami from above.

Finally, here is a picture of the lookout at the top of Zamami. We rode our bikes for so long to get there, so it felt really good when we finally did.

And that's it for the Okinawa posts! I went mountain hiking/mountain climbing last Sunday, so a post on that will be up in a couple of days.
